Carnival Jubilee 6-Day Western Caribbean from Galveston: Your Phone, Data & Wi-Fi Plan

Last verified: · Prices change often, so check before you buy. · We have not sailed this itinerary. We compiled this guide from the published prices and coverage of the cruise line, the carriers and eSIM providers, and we link every source below.

Short answer: On land you need coverage in two countries: Mexico (Cozumel) and Honduras (Isla Tropicale, Roatán). At sea (three full sea days) a normal travel eSIM won't work. Your options there are ship Wi-Fi (Carnival), or maritime cellular, which you get through your carrier's cruise pass or a cruise eSIM such as GigSky. These are different services.

The itinerary, day by day

1Depart Galveston, TXUSAYour home plan while docked. T-Mobile advises turning roaming off while the ship is in a US port so your phone doesn't pick up the ship's network.[5]
2At sea—Ship Wi-Fi or maritime cellular only
3CozumelMexicoMexican mobile networks (Telcel, AT&T Mexico and Movistar are reported near the piers[19])
4Isla Tropicale, Roatán (named Mahogany Bay until 2026[3])HondurasHonduran mobile networks (Tigo and Claro reported[19])
5–6At sea—Ship Wi-Fi or maritime cellular only

Itinerary per current sailing listings.[1][2] Jubilee also runs other Western Caribbean lengths from Galveston, including an 8-day route that adds Montego Bay, Jamaica.[2] If your sailing calls in Jamaica, make sure your plan covers Jamaica too.

Ship Wi-Fi vs. maritime cellular: they're different services

People often lump these together, but they're separate services from separate companies, and each needs different phone settings.

A third type, an ordinary land travel eSIM (country or regional), uses local networks in port only and won't work at sea. A "cruise eSIM" is a land eSIM plus maritime cellular access, not a Wi-Fi plan.

Before you sail: a 7-step checklist

  1. Confirm your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
  2. Choose your at-sea option: ship Wi-Fi, maritime cellular (carrier pass or cruise eSIM), or offline. Carnival Wi-Fi is cheaper if you buy it before you sail.[6]
  3. Install any eSIM at home over Wi-Fi. Activation rules differ by provider; GigSky warns that a plan that covers the US can start before you sail.[18]
  4. Before leaving Galveston, turn off data roaming on your main line, or use airplane mode, so you don't connect to the ship's cellular network by accident.[5]
  5. In Cozumel and Roatán, switch your data line to the eSIM and turn on roaming for it.
  6. Download offline maps for Cozumel and Roatán.
  7. Tell family how to reach you. Cellular Wi-Fi calling doesn't work on Carnival Wi-Fi, so use app-based messaging instead (and Premium for FaceTime).[6]

Travel insurance (separate decision)

This guide covers connectivity. Many cruisers also compare the cruise line's own vacation protection with third-party travel insurance. Ports & Bars doesn't give insurance advice. Read the policy documents or speak with a licensed agent.
